What would you do if you or a member of your family had a sudden severe toothache or needed emergency dental care in Elizabeth? When a patient has a toothache or other dental emergency, they need to have emergency dental care – not only to relieve the pain but sometimes to save the life of a tooth. If a tooth is abscessed or is in need of an immediate root canal, emergency treatment can mean the difference between treating and containing the infection, or losing the tooth. During an emergency root canal procedure our dentist will quickly gain access to the center of the infected tooth. Any infection will be removed and the tooth will be resealed. The tooth is then filled and a temporary crown is placed for protection over the tooth. This emergency dental care may actually save the tooth from being lost; in certain emergency dental situations time is definitely of the essence. That is why, when you have serious toothache, that it is important that you see a dentist as soon as possible. Emergency diagnosis and treatment can be critical.
Emergency dental care is also needed for other situations. Emergencies can occur when porcelain restorations such as veneers or crowns come loose and fall out. Or a tooth may be seriously cracked or knocked out during a sporting event. These are just a few situations when it is important or highly desirable to the patient to see the dentist quickly. If a tooth is knocked out you should rinse the tooth off, holding it by the crown. Then try to reinsert the tooth into its socket. If this does not work put the tooth in a glass covered by milk, or if milk is not available put the tooth in water containing a tiny bit of salt.
